Cystic Acne

This is otherwise known as the harshest and most painful type of acne, it can also be the most frustrating as it takes quite a long time to go - its not going to go overnight.

Cysts are formed on the surface of the skin and are red and swollen often filled with pus. The causes of cystic acne cannot be defined specifically, the causes vary from person to person, this makes finding a cure for cystic acne very hard, but here are the most common causes of cystic acne.

Although the term "cystic acne" is often credited to any kind of heavily inflammed cystic acne, not many people have actually developed cysts.

TOP TIP: A cyst feels like; SOFT, FLUID FILLED (PUS) LUMPS under the skin surface. Often very painful.

Nodulocystic acne sufferers have both CYSTS and NODULES and is known as the most severe kind of acne.

TOP TIP: A nodule feels like; HARD, PAINFUL LUMPS under the skins surface. They are often very large.

Causes of cystic acne
  • It could be caused by genetics, if acne runs in the family, i.e. your mom or dad has it, then you are more likely to have it.
  • Hormones could be another cause, most likely an increase in the amount of hormones which could occur from something like puberty or menstruation. The body produces androgens, which stimulate oil production, this oil then clogs up the pores and could cause acne breakouts.
  • A bad or poor diet can also affect or worsen acne, some people made have food sensitivity which could cause or trigger acne breakouts. More information about acne diets here.
  • While it has not been entirely proven that stress causes acne, it can trigger it with certain individuals.
  • Excess amount of dead skin cells, oils and bacteria that block or clog pores.
  • Large number of P. Acne bacteria, which causes acne breakouts.
