Acne Medication Reviews

These reviews are on the type of medication you would be prescribed if you visited your local GP or dermatologist, these types of medication are often seen as more effective, but can take time to show visible results, the average is 8 weeks! But in the long run, they have shown to be better then any "quick fix".


Benzoyl Peroxide

Benzoyl peroxide is seen as one of the most effective acne treatments. It is available through prescription or over-the-counter. It comes in many different forms, such as;

  • Cream
  • Gel
  • Wash

It is an anti-bacterial substance and comes in a varied amount of concentrations, ranging from 2.5% to 10%.

Salicylic Acid

What is Salicylic Acid?

Salicylic Acid is a liquid form for treating acne, it is often applied to pads and THEN applied to acne affected areas. But it is not just used to treat acne, it is often used to treat other disorders, such as;

  • Psoriasis
  • Dandruff
  • Calluses
  • Corns
  • Warts

What does Salicylic Acid do?

Salicylic Acid helps your skin to slow down the shedding of cells which can cause acne and clog pores. It can be also used to wear and break down blackheads and whiteheads.

Sulphur/Sulfur

What is Sulphur/Sulfur?

Sulphur is used in many washes, soaps and creams that treat acne, most famously in clearasil. It has been used for thousands of years to treat acne because of its drying and peeling effects on the skin, must the same as Benzoyl Peroxide.

What does Sulphur/Sulfur do?

Sulphur/Sulfur works to dry out the skin, and therefore can sometimes cause a peeling effect. It has also been known to break down Blackheads and Whiteheads, but at the same time could also produce them as it increases cell adhesion.

Resorcinol

What is Resorcinol?

Resorcinol is used to treat acne, eczema and psoriasis. It is rarely used on its own, and is normally accompanied by Sulphur/Sulfur.

What does Reorcinol do?

Resorcinol is very good at breaking down Blackheads and Whiteheads.

Erythromycin

What is Erythromycin?

Erythromycin is a common antibiotic used to treat acne, it comes in many different forms, the main ones are;

  • Ointment
  • Gel
  • Solutions

It is usually applied twice a day, in the morning and the evenings.

What does Erythromycin do?

Erythromycin, as an antibiotic, does what all antibiotics do; prevent bacteria from spreading and growing. It is sometimes used to treat acne as acne can be caused by bacteria infections.

Tetracycline

 What is Tetracycline?

Tetracycline is a oral antibiotic used to prevent the growth and spreading of bacteria that could cause acne. It is usually taken once a day.

 What Tetracycline does?

When oral antibiotics are used to treat acne, they are used for one purpose - to prevent the growth and expansion of P. acne bacteria. Tetracycline has also been claimed to have a "anti-inflammatory" effect.
